Patient guidelines in times of COVID 19

Unfortunately in these difficult times also, the previous surgical problems or new ones, are troubling patients on and of. And we are seeing a lot of unnecessary complications due to this neglect of surgical diseases — due to fear of covid.

All hospitals are returning to offering elective surgeries and procedures after the COVID-19 related postponements,

They are following evidence-based best practices as recommended by the CDC and ICMR.

Their provider and care teams have implemented significant safety measures to be able to deliver high quality and safe in-person care throughout our facilities to all those who need it during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you need surgical services.


If you were scheduled for a procedure that was postponed due to COVID-19, your care team will be in contact with you about rescheduling.They are doing our best to schedule all delayed procedures as quickly as possible, prioritising the most urgent cases first.

Due to the extra time needed for many of the safety considerations for surgery, it will take them longer to prep rooms and they will not be able to resume scheduling at full capacity for the time being.

Pre-Operative Testing

Pre-operative COVID-19 RT- PCR testing is a requirement for resuming elective surgeries and procedures.

Most patients will be swabbed for the COVID-19 test at their pre-operative History & Physical Exam as long as the exam falls within the prescribed timeframe for testing. If not, a separate testing time will be set.

You will be instructed to self-isolate from the time the COVID-19 swab is collected until the time of your procedure.

A negative test result must be received prior to the start of your procedure.

If you test positive for COVID-19, they will work with you to determine when and if your surgery or procedure can be performed. Surgeries necessary for COVID positive patients will be conducted in a COVID-specialty area . This area has been segregated both in terms of the physical space and the air-handling systems for safety.

What to Expect

No visitors are allowed . Please plan for your family or support person to communicate with you via phone or other electronic means during your stay and to coordinate pick up times.

You will be required to wear a mask upon arriving at facilities.

Social distancing within the buildings is required and is critical to their ability to continue offering services.

Expect to complete a screening questionnaire multiple times before having your surgery or procedure. While repetitive, please remember it is ultimately for your safety.

The informed consent process during your surgical preparation will include the traditional risks as well as the COVID related risks associated with your time in the hospital.

Intentional separation of patients and staff i.e staff who care for COVID patients will not be assigned to care for non-COVID patients.

Additional Safety Measures

Here are just some of the ways they have implemented new protocols to ensure safely care for you:

  • Increased lab testing capabilities, including drive-up testing
  • Real-time tracking of personal protective equipment (PPE) and local partnerships to meet PPE shortages such as surgical gowns, face shields and hand sanitizer
  • Virtual appointments to offer visits with nearly all care providers on a tablet, phone or computer
  • The creation of a respiratory assessment clinic
  • Restriction of all visitors
  • Screening of all patients, vendors, couriers, delivery-persons before they enter any facility
  • Social distancing practices in all lobbies, including Plexiglas shields between check-in staff and patients
  • Everyone wears a mask:
    • patient-facing staff wears a mask and face shield
    • non patient-facing staff and all patients are provided with cloth masks
  • Screening of all employees including temperature checks before each work shift
  • Enhancement of already rigorous cleaning practices

If the community COVID-19 status changes or concerns about maintaining adequate resources arise, ability to conduct elective cases may need to be adjusted.

Hence with these kind of measures , almost all hospitals are able to resume the normal operation schedule.

Rights and responsibilities of a patient !

Any country’s healthcare provider or healthcare facility recognise your rights while you are receiving medical care and that you respect the healthcare provider’s or healthcare facility’s right to expect certain behavior on the part of patients.   • A patient who is eligible for Medicare has the right to know, upon request and in advance of treatment, whether the health care provider or health care facility accepts the Medicare assignment rate.
  • A patient has the right to receive, upon request, prior to treatment, a reasonable estimate of charges for medical care.
  • A patient has the right to receive a copy of a reasonably clear and understandable, itemised bill and, upon request, to have the charges explained.
  • A patient has the right to impartial access to medical treatment or accommodations, regardless of race, national origin, religion, handicap, or source of payment.
  • A patient has the right to treatment for any emergency medical condition that will deteriorate from failure to provide treatment.
  • A patient has the right to know if medical treatment is for purposes of experimental research and to give his or her consent or refusal to participate in such experimental research.
  • A patient has the right to express grievances regarding any violation of his or her rights, as stated in Florida law, through the grievance procedure of the health care provider or health care facility which served him or her and to the appropriate state licensing agency.
  • A patient is responsible for providing to the healthcare provider, to the best of his or her knowledge, accurate and complete information about present complaints, past illnesses, hospitalisations, medications, and other matters relating to his or her health.
  • A patient is responsible for reporting unexpected changes in his or her condition to the healthcare provider.
  • A patient is responsible for reporting to the health care provider whether he or she comprehends a contemplated course of action and what is expected of him or her.
  • A patient is responsible for following the treatment plan recommended by the healthcare provider.
  • A patient is responsible for keeping appointments and, when he or she is unable to do so for any reason, for notifying the healthcare provider or health care facility.
  • A patient is responsible for his or her actions if he or she refuses treatment or does not follow the health care provider’s instructions.
  • A patient is responsible for assuring that the financial obligations of his or her healthcare are fulfilled as promptly as possible.
  • A patient is responsible for following healthcare facility rules and regulations affecting patient care and conduct
