What is endocrine system?

Endocrine system consists of several glands situated at different places in our body. These glands creates and secretes hormones, hormones helps coordinate your body’s function like moods, emotions, blood pressure, growth or sexual function. It almost does all the function by sending signals to different organs to act accordingly via blood.

What are endocrine disorders?

The most common endocrine disorders are

Diabetes: It happens when a hormone called insulin doesn’t work as it should or if when liver is inadequate in producing insulin. Insulin pushes the excessive sugar/glucose into the cells, which uses it produces energy. But when this doesn’t happen then the sugar level in blood shoots up.
Diabetes is one of the most common condition of all. India is home to 77 million cases which the second most in the world.
Acromegaly: This disorder comes into play when pituitary gland produces excessive growth hormone which in turn results in large bones and due to which height of an individual grows abnormally high.

Thyroid disorders: This disorder could be either thyroid producing excessive hormones or not secreting enough hormones. Thyroid gland produces hormones which are essential for cardiac, digestive and brain functions.
It is one the most common disorder. 42 million people are affected by this disorder. 1 in 10 Indians suffer from it. Women are five times more prone to this condition than men.
Low sex hormones: The low sex hormones from the gonads glands causes low sex drive, libido, infertility, absence of menstruation.
25% of Indian urban males suffer the problem of low testosterone.
PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome): This syndrome causes hormonal imbalance which further messes up with periods cycle and frequency. It could also lead further other complication like infertility or diabetes. Abnormal hair growth, excessive acne and fluctuating weight are some other causes.
Over 20% Indian women suffer from PCOS that is one in every five women.
Osteoporosis: It can happen in both women and men although it is more common in women. The bones becomes weak because of low production of sex hormones.
This condition is more prevalent in older age that is more than 50 but it also common especially among women. Almost 50 million Indians are affected by it.

How are endocrine disorders treated?

In most of the cases when the effect of disorders are mild people do not need any specific treatment. Although, when a non cancerous tumor comes into play due to the dysfunctional glands then surgery could be implemented.

Some endocrine disorders that may require surgery are

Type 2 diabetes and the surgery that is required to revoke it is the weight loss surgery also known as bariatric surgery. In this surgery the size of your stomach is reduced so that your intake of food reduces.
Cushing syndrome this occurs when cortisol hormones increases over time. Weight gains, lump of fatty tissues over neck and purple stretch marks are its symptoms.

Hyperthyroidism a conditions where the gland injects too much of thyroid hormone into the body. This could lead to Graves’ disease which is an immune disorder.
